Employee Profile – Billy Tran

Billy Tran is a Principal Consultant at CDSE, and a highly experienced engineer and project manager, who specialises in advising contractors and clients on how to effectively run their projects, supporting project teams with procurement, stakeholder management, construction planning, constructability analyses, interface management, and change management.

Billy developed a love for civil engineering while working in Vietnam as a contract administrator and moved to Australia after receiving a scholarship to study a Master of Business Administration. He deferred, first studying a Bachelor of Engineering at RMIT and Master of Technology (Pavements) at Deakin University, the latter of which was sponsored by his employer at the time, Downer. Since then, Billy has gained invaluable experience working across metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria, and the Northern Territory. For the last ten years, Billy has been working as a Senior Project Manager, tendering and delivering a wide range of infrastructure projects, such as the Tulla Sydney Alliance (TSA), Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 2, North East Link, CityLink Tulla Widening, Rail Systems Alliance (RSA), INPEX Ichthys Gas Plant Project, Melbourne Water Capital Work Program, South Gippsland Highway, M80 Upgrade, and the Suburban Roads Upgrade.

A career highlight for Billy was his first major civil project working on the Westgate Freeway Alliance in Melbourne. He maintains that for him, it is always the people that make the project.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have had really good mentors and project leaders who really influenced me and contributed to the way that I now run projects and interact with teams.’

Billy is passionate about finding effective ways to support teams to achieve their goals. He likes being involved in creating a healthy team culture and believes that the key to project success is supporting people to work harmoniously together, so that they can collectively respond well when unexpected changes occur. Over the years, Billy has become a valuable and trusted voice on projects. Through bringing people together and seeking input from the right connections, Billy takes a collective problem-solving approach to make a difference to the projects he works on.

‘It doesn’t matter how complex the project or how tight the budget is, if trust and openness have been established, effective work follows.’

Billy joined CDSE after deciding that he wanted to be a part of a culture that genuinely cared for people. He sought to be involved in a positive movement where people are encouraged to share with fearless vulnerability.
